The Fleet

I got back from a nice ride this evening and was admiring our newly expanded fleet of bicycles down in the basement. Joe was nice enough to give me one of his many bikes that he won't be able to take to Washington state with him when he moves. So here's what we've got in the basement:

Four nice bikes in a row, a nice sight.

This is Sarah's bike, nice and clean. Sadly, she hasn't had the opportunity to ride it much this year.

This is my mountain bike, which I will use for commuting while it is nice outside. The ugly fork is the only used fork I could find at The Hub that was the same size. Maybe some day I'll get around to repainting it... but I'm not in a rush. I spent a couple hours the other day cleaning and lubing the drive train and putting new commuting tires on it. Unfortunately, I also stripped the lock nut on top of the headset, so I'm going to have to take care of that soon.

This is my road bike. If I want to go fast, this is the bike I ride. It's not the fanciest bike in the world, but I like it quite a bit. I put most of my my miles on this bike.

Lastly, here's the bike that Joe gave me. It's an old Raleigh frame converted to a single speed. It's pretty ugly, I know, but it'll be a good winter commuting bike as there are fewer parts to keep clean. It has a new bottom bracket, pedals, tires, and I am working on replacing the seat post and stem. I am also adding a second brake. Since it isn't a fixie, brakes are good. Maybe next summer I'll strip all that ugly orange paint, polish the lugs, and either give the frame a new coat of paint or just clear coat it. That'll look nicer than the ugly orange. It could wind up being a pretty decent looking beater of a bike.

That's what we've got for now, and about all we have room for. That doesn't mean that there aren't other bikes I'd like in the future. Maybe when we have a garage, with bike space and work space as well. So here, in no particular order, *cue futuristic space-agey voice*

BIiiiIIkesSSSs of the fUUUUUuuUutUURRrrrRRE*

I'd really like to get a tandem some time. Sarah and I both like to ride, but we naturally ride at different speeds. This way, we'd be working together. Seems like it would be a lot of fun too.

I am really enjoying triathlons. When I went into the sport I thought it would be relatively cheap. I know how to run and have shoes. I know how to swim. I have a bike. Yeah... there's more to it than that and a bunch of specialized equipment. I've done pretty well with what I've got, but you can't help but ogle some of the hot bikes at races. Some day I'd love to race with a tri bike. When I go to bike shops, I need to bring a small towel with me to wipe up the drool when I'm looking at the fancy tri bikes. Maybe some day there'll be a bike like this in the garage:

Ok, I suppose by definition the next one isn't a bicycle, but I think it would be a lot of fun to ride a unicycle. Yes, please.

Only a little less seriously, a penny farthing. That's got to be a great ride. I don't think the front wheel is quite big enough on this one, though.

Then lastly, a little bike like this is definitely in our future and I'm really looking forward to it.
